Lose Your Ego

Don't Let Your Ego Deceive You

Do you ever feel like you're not good enough? That no matter what you do, it's never going to be good enough? This is often a symptom of ego. The ego can make us feel unworthy and undeserving. It can tell us that we are not good enough or worthy of love and success. But this is not true! You are enough, just as you are. In this article, we will discuss how to control your ego and learn to accept yourself for who you are.

Egos are powerful. When we make decisions based on our ego, we always make the wrong decisions. Our egos have many opportunities to make us feel we are not good enough, qualified, or competent. Maybe you were passed over for a promotion, rejected on a first date, or didn't get the job you were sure was meant for you.

An ego is critical and quick to point out all our mistakes; it is arrogant, entitled, prideful, and insecure. The ego needs an eviction notice, and you are the one to deliver it.

You Are Enough

By becoming aware of your ego, you can avoid negativity from it. In addition, being aware of and recognizing the negative effects of ego can help you overcome those effects and center your thoughts.

I recently had an encounter with my ego. I met a couple at a party, and we instantly clicked, the subject of real estate came up, and since I am a realtor, this was right up my alley! They said they planned to list their home soon but would be listing with a neighbor/friend. So I suggested they get another opinion on choosing a realtor; the wife said, "Do you have a business card?"

The following day was a holiday, so I had planned to take a day off. Suddenly, my phone rang, and it was the couple from the night before. They wanted to meet and discuss selling their house, so could we meet the following day? My holiday plans were immediately changed, which was an exception for me. I learned many years ago how important it is to protect my time, but this was an opportunity that I decided was worth sacrificing my time for. I spent most of the day working on my presentation and market analysis. As a result, I was confident that this would be my next listing.

The next day I spent two hours with them; I left confident and was sure that our meeting was productive and that they could see that I was more qualified than their neighbor (Ego in play). They told me they would call me the next day. However, the next day I received a text saying, "we enjoyed meeting you but felt obligated to use our neighbor; unfortunately, we met you a few days too late." The ego kicked in immediately, and I was inundated with negative messages such as, "you blew it," "you should have said this," "you should have followed up," and a series of other things. I allowed this to go on all day, feeling like crap and wasting my energy.

Finally, I reminded myself that this listing was not meant for me. I don't need to know why. I need to know that I now have time and space to find someone else to work with who will appreciate me and that I'm meant to work with. After reviewing the appointment, I reminded myself of everything that went well and noted a few things I could do better next time. I tried, I did my best at that moment, and that was enough. I am enough, and you are too.

Control Your Ego: Better Yet Let It Go Altogether

We all do this occasionally, don't we? Let's not do it anymore. It's such a waste of time and energy. Remind yourself that ego has no place in your life! You are treating yourself better.

Here are a few tools you can use to control your ego:

  • Be honest with yourself
  • Practice mindfulness
  • Let go of perfectionism
  • Be compassionate towards yourself and others

Remember and embrace what you are worth. Remember - you are enough.
